ST TOS Preview #3 : Draft Missions….Good or Great?

Welcome back to our 3rd preview of Star Trek DBG The Original Series. Today we will be looking at the all new Draft Missions which will give players a better way to plan out their strategy before the game actually begins.

How does a Draft Mission work? Well that is simple enough, there are 15 Standard Missions which take the place of the 15 Standard Starships found in the TNG games. These 15 Missions have a purple boarder similar to the Starships they replace and are used in both Scenarios found in this game. Each of those 15 Missions have a counterpart card that looks exactly the same EXCEPT it has the red back you see above.

At the start of the game each player will be dealt 3 of these Draft Missions face down, they will choose to keep 2 of them and discard the last one. Each player may look at their Draft Mission anytime throughout the game. During your turn, a you may flip up your Draft Mission and complete it as though it was a Mission in the Mission Area by spending 1 Explore. Sounds simple enough right? This gives players 100 points that they can potentially achieve without having to ever explore if they gather the cards needed to meet their Draft Mission Goals. Here is one of the Standard Missions from TOS:

The Goal of The Apple can be met with 5+ Speed and 5+ XP or just 5+ Diplomacy. The Reward will give you 2 cards immediately and make each opponent discard 1 card from their hand.

Some of you maybe wondering: What happens if the Draft Mission I have face down is flipped from the Space Deck? Well I’m glad you asked Imaginary person i made up to ask me this question. Here are the additional rules for the Draft Missions:

  • If a Draft Mission is completed and then later the counterpart to that Missions is flipped from the Space Deck, you immediately remove that Mission from the game and flip the next card.
  • If a Standard Mission is completed from the Mission Area, before your matching Draft Mission is completed by you, you can no longer complete your Draft Mission and it will remain face down for the rest of the game. This means you can’t wait forever to complete your Draft Missions.

As always come back tomorrow for another preview and let us know what you think about the new Draft Missions in the comments or on Facebook.

Very cool. It gives the game a different feel. You start building a certain kind of deck from turn one? Also, it kinda insights a “Ticket to Ride” kinda feel.
