    K'mpec

Does his ability work from the discard pile if he was played earlier then put in there by another effect.

    No.

"During the turn this card is played, you may trash it from your bridge to deal 10 damage to a battling starship."

Refereed a really great game tonight - came down to 350 points on either side, and a war was flipped, causing one guy to lose by a margin of 2 speed - that's quality gaming right there. An interesting question came up with K'mpec, though, and while I'm fairly confident in my ruling on it, I figured I would still post it here, both in case it comes up for anyone else, and to get an official ruling from Alex. The situation was this:

K'mpec was played at the beginning of player A's turn. Player A explores and flips a War event. Player A has played all cards in their hand prior to the War event being flipped, and so passes each card play until both players have passed consecutively, at which point damage would normally be dealt. However, Player A has noticed now that Player B's speed has now exceeded his own, and so wants to activate K'mpec's ability, targeting Player B. Obviously, the question raised was whether or not Player A would still be able to activate K'mpec once the damage dealing phase had been entered, and I ruled that in order to activate K'mpec, Player A would have to have done so prior to both player's passing their card plays, as damage is immediately dealt in order of speed at that point, not allowing for any further card effects.

It would depend on this game's interpretation of "turn", especially during a battle.

Is a "turn" over only when the active player draws their cards? If so, then a player who plays K'mpec at any time during that turn, whether before a battle or during, can sacrifice him to shoot a ship out of space. This, by the way, sounds like a very Klingon thing to do; how do you say kamikaze in Klingon? The wording from another popular game for this effect would be, "trash K'mpec: deal 10 damage to target battling ship."

Is a "turn", during a battle, playing one card from your hand to your bridge? If so, then the player who plays K'mpec has to play him and trash him immediately to use his effect. If he's in play when the battle begins, then he will not have the opportunity to use his ability. The wording from the other game would be, "when K'mpec arrives on the bridge you may trash him, if you do he deals 10 damage to target battling ship."

Yeah... I love the fine intricacies of rules interpretations.

You would have to activate K'mpec's effect during the time that you can play a card in the war. So if you pass and then all other players pass as well, you will not get the chance to activate K'mpec.
