It seems pretty straight forward to me. You can mix the star base, borg and exploration cards from each set together. Klingon and the unification are the only ones you don't mix.

Just look at the sides of the cards and just match up the colors....gold with gold, green with green, and whatever color the star base cards are.

As for star ships it is more of what you like and don't like.

It is awesome that you got both sets but I think if you spend a fair amount of time just playing the Premier edition you will start to see how one would go about adding the second set to it.

IMHO the 2nd set is not really that great as a stand alone game. But added to the Original it adds alot of depth and variety to the space deck and gives star base a fresh look and more options.

I have played several cards games and this one by far is my favorite. It has a great theme along with great game mechanics. Aside from the typeos this game is pretty solid. When I original picked up this game I was unsure of how my friends would react to it but all of them love it.

If you haven't tried Borg mode then you are in for a wild ride.

umm....ok? You put the cards together. I mean, its not really rocket science. The simplest and easiest way of doing it is just to mix the 15 ships from each set with both exploration decks, then mix the starbase decks. Presto! Instant 9-player exploration game. But there's any number of ways you can do it beyond that - that's a big part of the fun, is finding out what works for you.

Really, this is (to me) more than a little ludicrous. I mean, they included enough ships in The Next Phase to run all four scenarios at nine players - specifically requiring that you have the Premiere set to get the most out of TNP. But because they didn't include a section of text in the rulebook saying "by the way, to combine the sets, you put the cards from both sets together", you feel cheated.

Here's what I am going to try next time my friend and I play Exploration:

I reduced the number of any of the starbase setup/maneuver cards from the Next Phase that exceeded 4 cards. This was because the original game has 4 of each and I was tired of seeing warp cores and baryon sweeps everywhere.

We're only going to use the 25 point ships from both games combined. So that's 12 ships.

For the space deck I did the following:

All war events from both sets (8 total 5 from original 3 from NP)
3 non point awarding mission cards from NP
2 Q non point event cards from original
6 (all) 25 point mission cards from original
8 mission/event cards from NP with the DNA fragments

and then 3 mission cards from each deck of "medium" level (50-75)
I chose: Remember Me, Space Bacteria, and Garbage Scow from original
and: Ship Hijacking, Berlinghoff Rasmussen, and Journey's End from NP

I picked those 6 because of their point level and rewards. (most are ship upgrades, starbase card uprades) but you can choose whatever you like.

    That's 33 cards + 12 starships. 45 total deck size.

I did this after comparing total possible points between the two deck sets. The original game, with ships, has a total of 1050 possible points. The expansion has 1200 (could be wrong on these numbers, It's from memory) My set has 1600 total points.

I would reccomend playing to 400 points with this set, but it's up to you. There are only 2x 75 point cards in the whole set, 20x 50 point cards, and 23x 25 point cards

We're also considering allowing 2 searches per turn and maybe having 12 starbase cards face up instead of 9... but haven't decided yet.

I'll let everybody know how it went. Or if you try yourself or have any changes let me know! thanks

note:: I just realized the total points from the 2 sets are way off from 1050 and 1200. I don't think those numbers include 50 or 75 point ships. Needless to say, those numbers increase and get closer or even exceed my deck setup of 1600. This was by my design to have enough cards and a good showing between the two decks to equal normal game play.

When my wife and I play we just smush the two games together and play an uber-game. 30 starships, a bajillion starbase cards, etc. With the missions being so plentiful this means that you get to 400 really fast, so we actually play to 800, which favors building complicated decks and long-term strategies instead of a fast game.

I feel the similarities between the two sets is great. Not a disappointment. So often game makers release a new set that is TOO different that it ruins all previous versions. This set is a great match. Also, so many other games require you to buy booster packs to spice up the gameplay. Boosters are much more difficult to use (and more expensive) than a complete new ready-to-use set.

We dont HAVE TO combine the two sets like we do booster packs. But when we want to, deciding how is fun. Not frustrating. I look forward to mixing more releases together. I hope eventually, we can have decks with Archer, Kirk, Picard, Sisko, and Janeway all on the same bridge.

It's not really that complicated. Just throw it all together. Put 4 wormholes in for some fun and play. We've been doing that for a while now and it doesn't hurt the game at all. Sure in a two player game we don't cycle all the way through the deck but that makes scoring a great character that much sweetier.
