Ask the Designer – Part 1

After getting some great feedback from the our Facebook fans, we decided to let them post questions for the lead designer of ST DBG, Alex Bykov. So here is the first edition of Ask The Designer, enjoy.

Q: Will there be an official alternate rule on getting ships in the first 2 sets? Currently, it relies too much on luck and favors the person who gets a ship first, and I like the way the TOS set deals with ship to ship combat.

A: We had discussed this possibility and decided that it best to leave the rules as is but to tell players about the alternate way to play:

When a non-starter Flagship is defeated it stops being your flagship and you downgrade to the starter flagship.

This house rule reduces the impact of the upgraded Starships. We found that when playing with 3-4 players the lead gained by the upgraded Starship could be reduced by having the other 2-3 players team up against that player. However, if you feel that even upgrading to a Starship is too much of an advantage, you can simply eliminate the rule to be able to upgrade from the starter Flagship. In the case of the Starships from the Next Phase Edition, you can use the effect of a gained Starship but not the stats.

Q: Several people have asked about future releases of Star Trek Deck Building Game and the possibility of other Star Trek Series such as Deep Space Nice and Voyager.

A: At this time we are not announcing any specific expansion, however, there is no limit to where this game can go as its popularity grows. I would love the opportunity to expand this game to the other Star Trek titles.

Q: Are we going to see ships again?

A: The Original Series of the game did not feature Starships, however, that wasn’t because we thought ships were a bad idea or too strong. It was party to create a simpler play experience and mainly because there were very few useable Starships in The Original Series. In future expansions I can definitely see new Starships. Keep in mind that listen to feedback about the game and will find ways to create fun and interesting Starships that don’t create a runaway effect.

Q: Are there plans for small-box expansion boosters? Kind of like the current LCG releases that Fantasy Flight Games does, only not as often, and maybe smaller?

A: We have considered small-box expansions but we have to decide, what is the best option for a release based on the strength of our player base? At a certain point when the player base is large enough from our perspective we can look at small-box expansions, Now that the game is on its way to Europe that may raise the player base by a large percent. We realize that when we create a large amount of base sets players feel like they are getting a lot of the same cards due to having the same Starter and Basic cards as in the TNG games. We do strive to provide enough of a new experience in each game to reduce and eliminate that feeling as we did in TOS.

Hope you enjoyed the Q&A and feel free to submit questions for a future article on the Star Trek Facebook Page.
