Resident Evil: Outbreak Preview #4

Everyone excited yet for the release this coming Friday? Where will you all be playing? If you don’t have plans to play, now is the time to get together with some friends, take a break from all those impersonal vidya games that you young whippersnappers have, and get some face time with some Infected!

Oh, and speaking of Infected, theres this guy…

…and hes not very happy that your still alive. This guy will put on the added pressure by raising your Infection Level AND probably killing off your Character, making him the strongest boss Infected thus far. He was designed to have a lessened impact to a player the weaker that they are, allowing those weaker players a slight advantage over their cohorts who may (or may not) be ahead. This guy went through about 4 different iteractions revolving around the same effect before finally settling where he is. For those wishing to try his original version, he used to increase your Infection Level by 3 if he wasn’t Defeated. Many testers felt that to be a little on the unfair side if you were in last place, so his effect was dulled slightly.

Oh, and did I mention hes bringing friends to the party?

This guy is meant to be a mini version of the boss, with an effect that increases your Infection more depending on how Infected you already are. His Health is decent, but his overall intent was to push everyones Infection level above 5, increasing that tension around the table where everyone is wondering who will be turned first. I remember I had an old issue of a gaming magazine when I was 12 years old and I would read the strategy for the original Resident Evil over, and over, and over again. Sometimes I would read it 3-4 times in a week, simply because I found it as interesting as a book. The best part was reading about Yawn and how difficult he was to defeat in the game. My mind ran wild with ideas: Does he eat you whole like a real snake? How big is he? Can’t I just avoid him? I read that strategy guide until I was 13 years old and got a Playstation for my birthday, and the horror commenced.

Of course, Yawn is just a pet. Tyrant needs to bring a real wingman with him, and so, we have this guy who your all familiar with:

Design purpose? Hopefully turn multiple people at once. I have seen it happen on occassion, but nobody is happy when this guy flips. Obviously he was designed with the new Outbreak mechanics in mind, but reflects the Set 1 Nemesis in that fashion. I’ve never enjoyed myself more seeing peoples happiness fade into doubt when he flips, and I hope you will feel that doubt this Friday when Outbreak releases.

Be sure to pick up a copy at your local store. Better yet, don’t just pick up a copy, call some of your friends over for a gaming night. Nothing like a few Infected to build up team spirit, unless your the spiteful type, in which case theres always room for destroying everyone and claiming victory. After all, we have to let the undead win every once in awhile…
