I can see Tear Gas, I just never include it in the pools, well honestly cause I thought it was to good. So yes. Tear Gas just slipped my mind. Though Ominous has felt like the best action to me since set one so if I had to vote I'd still go with Ominous.
On the subject of flamethrower though I have read people taking about it and I've tried it out along with some of the other people I play with but I just don't think its as good as other builds. I do feel with Josh and Billy its great but sets ups that slim the deck down guaranteeing the high damage weapons and such seem to require less effort and are faster than building a huge deck while securing the Flamethrower each turn.
...and on that logic I feel I might see that being the case if I played more with Tear Gas. I admit the times with Tear Gas also included custom inventories, Mercs Rebecca gets it. So I'll include Tear Gas in the next few sessions with default inventories and see if I still feel that way.

I feel The Mercenaries is a great use of an action. Why buy that Magnum when you can steal it? And while you don't get the damage from the Flamethrower, you an deny another player the use of it.
