Building my own storage box for the game (with pictures!)

I've mentioned on this forum previously, but I'm in the process of building a custom box that'll hold the core set, alliance, and outbreak comfortably (with some room to grow). My goal is to make it look like an inventory stash from the first couple RE video games.

I first googled for pictures of a stash from the games, but I couldn't find any, so I ended up playing RE1 and 2 and took some pictures with my cell phone, haha. I ended up with this picture as a reference:

I then went over to my Dad's house, where he has a 3 car garage converted into a work shop. We built this box using MDF (really smooth compressed wood type material). In order to make the lid fit perfectly, we actually built a solid box with no openings, then just sawed off the top to form the lid.

After that, I went to hobby lobby and got some paints.

For the main color of the box, I used a reddish brown laquer paint that I found in the model car/train isle.

It ended up being brighter red than I had hoped, and I ran out of paint before I could finish the inside. I may get a darker color when I go back to the store and try repainting it.

After I finish the main paint color, I'm going to build a bunch of trim pieces (3/4 in slats of wood) to frame the edges of the box. I have little sticky dots/beads that I'll use to give the appearance of rivets, and I'm going to paint the trim pieces metallic silver.

I'll post more pictures when I make more progress.

if you wanted it a darker red you should've primered it with a dark color. The most common base coat color for darks is Black.

I really need to get back to work on this thing. I finished painting all the "metallic" looking trim pieces, and I only have to staple them onto the box. Then I need to add 2 hinges and I'm pretty much finished.

As for your suggesiton jarome, I actually repainted the main box with a "root beer" color of the same type of paint as I used before. It looks better now, tho not quite like the picture from the game. I'll post more pictures when I made a bit more progress on the thing. Thanks for the comments guys.

this is pretty awesome. I would very much like to see the finished product. I want one of my own. I've been lobbying for Bandai to make the item box for some time, but you're apparently ambitious enough to take matters into your own hands. Nice work! I've got some maple 1x4s laying around. Maybe I could have box too!
