First Impressions: Resident Evil 6 (PS3)
It seems like every time I make a video game post, there isn't a sub forum for the game, haha.
Anyway, like probably a few of you, I picked up Resident Evil 6 yesterday.
I've played maybe 2 or 3 hours of it, so I'll post some quick spoiler free impressions.
Graphics:
The graphics are a bit underwhelming to be honest. I think they went easy on a lot of the textures so it wouldn't take forever to load the levels, but it doesn't seem as pretty as RE5. However, I did play RE5 on the PC, so maybe I'm just expecting too much from a console version.
Gameplay:
Here is where the game went through a lot of changes. RE4 and 5 were pretty similar, control wise, and RE6 builds off of that, but adds a clunky cover mechanic (I say clunky because you have to hold down the aim button to go into cover, and it feels really unintuitive at first) and lots of melee attacks. I love that you can continually melee attack enemies now, instead of waiting for the on-screen button to appear, as it makes those close combat fights a lot easier. You will likely find the controls a bit sluggish when it comes to close combat tho, as it's kind of tricky to turn and aim your melee attacks.
My biggest complaint about the game so far is the camera. It's awful, horribly awful. RE4 and 5 had this problem a bit, where the camera follows too close so the character covers too much of the screen, but it seems even worse in RE6. It also bounces around between your left and right shoulders automatically when you go into cover, which is infuriating. When I'm walking through a room, I often have to switch between left and right shoulder camera positions just so I can see what's in front of me. I really hope they make some changes to the camera in a patch, but I have a feeling I'll have to live with it.
Second biggest complaint, disappearing weapons. This is a problem in the other games as well, but it seems even more annoying in RE6 than it was in 4 or 5. In RE6 a lot of the enemies have guns and melee weapons. When you kill them, it drops the weapon on the ground and it even looks all nice and shiny like you can pick it up, but alas. The weapon fades away after a couple seconds. I understand from a gameplay perspective that the game would be too easy if you could pick up every assault rifle you find, but it bugs me. There is a part in the game where a character has no equipment, and says "I shouldn't think of fighting anybody until I find a guy". Well right after that you can sneak kill a guard carrying an assault rifle, but you can't pick it up. You don't get a gun for another 20 minutes in a cutscene.
Story:
So far here is where the game makes up for its faults. The storyline, the characters, and the dialog are all really well done from what I can tell at this time. The game has a good way of telling the story to keep you interested, and RE fans will love the character development and intertwining stories.
Overall I'm really enjoying the game so far. I can't wait to see some of the new characters in the deck building game. (make it happen Tylar!)

I haven't had much issue with the camera. I'll admit the cover system is kinda awkward, though. And there are some segments of the game that are outright frustrating (Oh, hi, snowmobile...), but others that are pretty cool (All of Leon chapter 1, basically).
As for potential for the DBG? This would be a great time to expand on the Melee weapon class; theres even a perfect canidate for a "Melee Specialist" character in Jake. (kinda like how Barry's the Magnum Specialist, Sheva for Rifles, etc)
PS, anybody here on the PS3 side of RE.net?
-
I'm on the PS3 side. I'm looking to get that 10 site buddies web badge too.

I haven't even looked into what the RE.net thing is about, I'm on PS3 as well.
I've finished the 3 main campaigns, and I'll be starting the 4th hidden campaign tonight probably.
I'm really enjoying the game, despite all its flaws. It works great single player and co-op, and has enough content to keep things interesting.

Go to RE.net then, and search my PSN name, WaveLightning777.
(also, if you look at my stats, don't mind my insane "Saved from dying" number; I've been stuck with the AI, and Field Medic 2 has made me a bit reckless about it.)
