Question A newcomer asks your feelings on MA-068 Hunter

    Hello everyone,

I want to start this off by saying that I am still new to this game and DBGs in general (saw an RE game and had to buy it) so I don't know all that many strategies.

I would like to ask you guys how you feel about the Hunter in this set. I'll admit, I just lost a game because of it but I feel like it was completely unfair and I guess I'll explain what happened and hopefully you guys can give me some insight on how you deal with it.

So I bought Nightmare earlier today and a friend and I had time to sit down and get a game in. We used the standard "Nightmare" setup for our first game. Anyway, as we were going through it I had a bit of a head start because I got Luis as my starter (two snipers) and my buddy got Leon (two handguns). I was able to get a few points on him before he got going. We had about 3 points between us for the most part. Problem is he revealed a Hunter, I take 20 off the top, unfortunate but not enough to upset me. We continue and he reveals another, I am still in the lead by a couple and I get hit by its effect again, down to 40/40 health. He didn't kill it though so it went back in. We continue and I get unlucky and reveal the boss when I only had an incendiary grenade (but it was dealing 75 dmg!). I get downed, and now have 20/20. Anyway, immediately after I get flipped up he reveals the Hunter again. I am dead. Out of the game. He has 27, I have 30, I give him the win after peeking at the top card and seeing it is worth 4.

At this point I am pretty upset. Games, I know, I wasn't that upset though. So, what do you do in this situation, do you slow down, let your opponents get more decorations then you so that you can stay safe? I don't like that idea because then I have to stay behind until both Hunters are killed. Do you not play with it? (or is it just me thinking it is too powerful?)

Or did I just get really unlucky, having the Hunter go back in and getting hit by it's effect 3 times? I don't like the idea of getting blue shelled in Mario Kart and this is pretty much the exact same thing. I feel like it should knock 20 off the character with the most Health.

Thanks for reading and I appreciate any insight, even if it is pointing out something stupid I have done.

I do not think you did anything wrong. The newest Hunter just really stinks if you're in the lead. I had a similar situation in a four player game where the point leader was eliminated by Hunters that always were revealed on other players explores. It might be worthwhile to house rule his text to something like "When this infected is revealed by the player with the most decorations..." if you feel it's too deadly. That way if they don't eliminate it from the deck and it pops up again, it's only their fault. Instead of Player 2 who is exploring into the Hunter again and again and not killing/eliminating him from the mansion and indirectly beating Player 1 to death. I felt really sorry for the guy in our game who was eliminated through no fault of his own purely because he was playing better than his three opponents.

Read this thread http://www.bandai.com/residentevil/f...-Funny-moments. As for your fix to the Hunters, they would shred Premier Chris, turning him into an even worse character, and become the best friend of any character who gets a boost from low health. That said, you can always house rule it if the other players in your group agree.

I like this, I'll play a few more games with the normal effect and then ask my group which rule they would prefer.

Thanks for that link, reading through it was fun. Good to know crazy stuff happens all the time! Also, I totally forgot about regular Chris. After the first game with Chris we gave everyone the option to draw again if they got him during character selection. Which is too bad because boulder destroying Chris is by far my favourite character in the Resident Evil games.

I would put it down to really bad luck on your part! Hope it doesnt happen again!

I, for one, LOVE the new hunter (and yes I have had him get me on more than one occasion!). Yeah it can suck big time if he hits at the beginning but thems always been the breaks. I also am just partial to hunters in general as they are my favorite RE monster, and I am stoked to see that they are now what they should be...one of the scariest monsters to bump into.

Hope you find a way to make him and the game work best for you and your group though! The games all about having fun!
And I hate dancing. That is one of my least favorite things to do. Other things that I hate are exercise, work, people, stupid people.

    No doubt.

I became fairly comfortable with the mansion cards in the base set, knowing that 60 was enough for everything but the boss. Now I have to take into account my decorations, my inventory (lest I get blasted by a rocket before I can retaliate, or face a strong invincible monster), Saddler filling my inventory with stuff I don't want and how deadly multiple explores can become with the invincible monsters. I appreciate the mansion cards in this set but the Hunter's ability did not leave a good first impression, but as you said, it could have just been straight awful luck. I guess I'll just have to make peace with it for now. I'll see how many players it takes out and decide what to do with it from there.

I also like the idea of randomizing the mansion with the cards from other sets. If I do that then there is less chance the Hunter from Nightmare will show up

Go with what works for you and your group. One of the things I have liked the most about this game is just how malleable the rules really are...there are plenty of ways to make an enjoyable game for all!

Yeah...its a love/hate relationship for me too. I love it when I'm not the one in the lead and I hate it when I am. Seriously though, its the only way to actually kill Nightmare Ada at lvl 2. The nightmare mansion is such a nasty one...probably the deadliest of the 4 thus far even if the boss can't one shot any character at starting health. I've used a few house rules before, but I have to say that not using any makes the game more enjoyable for me. You and your group might feel different though.

I totally love the new Hunter! Why? It helps weaker players to catch up, it can kill Ada and - which is the most important point for me - leaves a lot of space for new strategies.
I once had a game where I got one dec. in my first round and after 3 turns I had 30-40 damage frequently on my hand. None of the other players had any decorations at that point. So what happened?
    1st explore - 30 damage - hunter - from 70/70 to 50/50
the next round I had 40 damage on my hand, one hunter was on the bottom of the mansion so why not explore (there where only 3 infected I couldn't kill)
    so - 2nd explore - Saddler - 30/30
    And Still one dec.
So I wouldn't explore again until I got maximum damage.
Then player 2 explores - hunter - 10/10 - so much about not exploring!
Then player 3 explores - 2 decs. for him
So after 5 rounds I was down to 10 maximum health with ONE decoration.
Then, the next round, player 2 explores - Laser Trap... underneath it Mendez!
No my round... so I kept myself in the background and only explored when I would definitely kill the infected (which was not seldom).
So what happened was: Player two got killed by Saddler and the Hunters on 20 dec.
Player 3 survived and ended up with 19 dec.
And me... I won with 23 dec cause by the time player 2 was killed the most dangerous enemies for me where already defeated and I catched up...
That was kind of a great moment and finding the right strategy with the hunter in each new game is just a great thing with all the thinking twice if you shall explore and so on!
