    Using characters

Hi there, just only question about using charecters: I own all sets and some characters has ability for alliance game, some for outbreak etc...how do you play for example game with base set (mansion, equipment,...)? Only use characters from core base set? Without mixing? Or playing outbreak without brainwashed Jill, Josh Stone etc?

    Thx

I play mixed. At the beginning we randomly pick 10 characters and each player than draws 2 from which he can choose one. If a player has dawn 2 characters which have no abilities that can be used in the scenario it's bad luck and the player has to play with it.

I've won with a character based on the Partner Modification in an Outbreak game before. I forgot which character it was. It sucks 'cause you get no benefits from your character so they're basically only there for the Health. That's when you use your true deck-building skills to overcome that, lol.

Nowadays I remove certain characters before randomly distributing them prior to starting the game, depending on which game type my friends and I are playing. For example; if we're playing Story Mode, I'll remove characters that are based on Partner Modification and Outbreak. That way nobody gets a useless character. Because every time someone gets a useless character, they always complain and want a re-pick, lol.

I usually do the same thing. The rulings on Hunk and Brainwashed Jill make them very playable in non-partner mode though (check the Rules Q&A for more on that). But I will remove Josh (Alliance) and any other characters that have un-usable abilities (Rebecca Exxcella and Jill from Outbreak), according to game mode, but not resources. Characters like Steve Burnside (I think?) are still in even if there is no Uroboros Injection in the resources. Basically, if both abilities are un-usable, like Excella in non-outbreak mode, they are out. If they have one that is usable, like Barry with no Magnums, then they stay in.

I used to do Character Picks, then Resource layouts, but there's getting to be too many character who's skills are card or card type dependent, so I just randomly put out 6-7 weapons and actions. Then players get a stack of 5 characters, 2 in the case of Partner mode, and they select one from those five. If someone picks a character without the proper cards in the store at that point it's their own fault.

I've pulled the Rebecca, Jill, Excella: Outbreak, as well as Josh, Hunk, Jill (BW). I've recently pulled VS based characters since I still do a lot of 2 player games so Rebecca Premier & Wesker (Nightmare) got set aside until there's more players.

Id usually do something where we randomly deal out X characters, and then the players pick which to use. If they have 1 that has no use in the game we would put that card back and randomly give them a replacement.

In the end its preference and you can do whatever you and your friends like.
If you have a Promo Wesker PR-005 you are interested in selling, PM me

Dealing the characters out randomly and letting everyone pick a character or team from their draw is pretty much a perfect solution.

With the base set, we deal 3 each. Now that I have an expansion (not yet played), we may deal more just so we have more choices and more chance of seeing some of the new characters in play.

Now... if you get into playing with Custom Resources (Advanced Note 1 from p13 of the core rulebook), you have some other issues to consider.

Each of these ways of doing it is a different balance of strategy and simplicity:

Players select the Resources and then find out what characters they have to pick from

Players find out what characters they have to pick from and then select Resources and then pick their character
    - And in this case are the character 'pools' secret or revealed to other players before selecting Resources?

Players pick their character then select Resources
    - And in this case is the character selection secret or revealed to other players before selecting Resources?

Depending on how hardcore your group is, your choice of how to handle this can make the game very interesting, or make startup very slow and annoying. But I'd recommend you decide which way to do it before starting a Custom Resources game, for sure.

When I play, we usually choose the resources first, then deal out # of characters needed for mode +1. If we play multiple games, the characters that were used in previous games are removed from the character pile so they won't pop up again until all the other characters have been used. We also remove characters like Excella that have mode specific abilities unless we decide to play said mode.

If not playing Outbreak, I pull Rebecca, Jill and Excella. Also, if we're not playing something with explosives, I pull and character with explosive abilities.

To choose characters, we divide the cards equally amoungst the table, any odd cards are left out. Then we draft the characters. Each player takes 1 character, thenn passes the rest to the left. We do this until we get our original pile back. Once we get the pile back, those cards are set aside and not used. Then, from the characters we drafted, we make our selection (main and partner).

When playing with a play group, people tend to have favorite characters. Drafting characters alows you to hate draft their favorites out.

Does anyone use a "legendary" rule when more than 1 Leon (or other same named character) is choosen?
Legendary means that only 1 can exist; no two same named people can be in the same game.

No, but I do get a kick out of pairing up same name characters.
