The Deck Doctor: Forever Red!

By Anh Do

Welcome back, heroes! It’s another wonderful week as we continue “The Deck Doctor” article series. Here I’m going to take a look at another deck list that was sent to me, and will fix it up to function smoother and more consistently.

The deck list I’ve chosen is a “Forever Red” deck built by Chris Goujyujin. The name of this deck pays homage to the legendary 10th anniversary Power Rangers special where 10 of the first Red Rangers teamed up to protect our world; it was truly an epic moment! Knowing this legacy we wanted players to be able to play with their own deck of all Red Rangers and make it competitive as well.

Here is the original list!

Chris Goujyujin’s Forever Red Deck

0 Cost (14 cards)
2x Red Jungle Fury Ranger (P-073)
2x Red Lightspeed Rescue Ranger (2-044)
2x Red Galaxy Ranger (2-104)
2x Red S.P.D. Ranger (P-069)
3x Red Megaforce Ranger (2-027)
3x Red RPM Ranger (2-051)

1 Cost (10 cards)
2x Red Wild Force Ranger (P-070)
2x Red Mighty Morphin Ranger (1-067)
2x Red Mystic Force Ranger (P-068)
2x Red Space Ranger (2-067)
2x Red Ninja Storm Ranger (P-071)

2 Cost (2 cards)
2x Red Super Samurai Ranger (Lauren) (2-093)

3 Cost (4 cards)
2x Red Samurai Ranger (Shark Attack Mode) (1-086)
2x Red Dragon Fire Mystic Force Ranger (2-100)

Chris’s main issues with his deck was that it is heavily reliant on promo cards and did not utilize enough of Series 1 or Series 2 (which was not available at the time his deck list was sent). He wanted the deck to use as few promos as possible to make it more accessible so everyone can enjoy the power of Red!

Well Chris, we totally agree! We feel you can definitely build a solid “Forever Red” deck without spending a grip of money. My fixes to your deck will be done with the limitation that players have only purchased or have access to the contents of one Deluxe Gosei Morpher which contained many of the staple (crucial) “Forever Red” promo cards.

Lets see what I came up with!

0 Cost (10 cards)
1x Red Jungle Fury Ranger (P-073)
2x Red Lightspeed Rescue Ranger (2-044)
2x Red Galaxy Ranger (2-104)
1x Red S.P.D. Ranger (P-069)
3x Red Samurai Ranger (2-012)
1x Red RPM Ranger (2-051)

1 Cost (11 cards)
1x Red Wild Force Ranger (P-070)
1x Red Mighty Morphin Ranger (1-067)
1x Red Mystic Force Ranger (P-068)
2x Red Space Ranger (2-067)
1x Red Ninja Storm Ranger (P-071)
3x Red Samurai Ranger (1-100)
2x Red Samurai Ranger (Lauren) (2-013)

2 Cost (4 cards)
3x Red Super Samurai Ranger (1-085)
1x Red Mystic Force Ranger (Legend Mode) (2-101)

3 Cost (5 cards)
3x Red Samurai Ranger (Shark Attack Mode) (1-086)
2x Red Dragon Fire Mystic Force Ranger (2-100)

Because a “Forever Red” Deck functions without any Zord or Megazord cards, I decreases the number of 0 cost cards in your deck in place for more higher cost cards. My reasoning was that maintaining a large hand size isn’t as important (playing a cost 0 card on its own will net you card advantage by the next turn), you want to hit hard as fast as possibly as often as possible so cost 1 and above cards are your bread and butter.

Let’s take a look at your new 0 cost lineup! As you can see the staple Deluxe Gosei Morpher promo cards remain but are limited to 1 copy each. Red Samurai Ranger (2-012) was added to take advantage of the very strong cost 2 Red Super Samurai Ranger (1-085) that was newly added. After modifying your deck you have a solid 8 Samurai cards in order to play 1-085 on top of which is a decent ratio in a 30 card deck.

At cost 1, powerful Samurai Ninjas like Red Samurai Ranger (1-100) and Red Samurai Ranger (Lauren) (2-013) are included to give you deck an aggressive edge!

No much needed to be fixed for your cost 2 and 3 card choices. Red Samurai Ranger (Shark Attack Mode) is the quintessential staple for a “Forever Red” Deck, it provides the raw destructive power needed to deal damage quickly. The same goes for the Red Super Samurai Ranger (1-085) which gives you power and is a deterrent against Megazord/Zord plays since its impressive dual MAX Power values are a force to be reckoned with.

Lastly, with your larger hand size, due to playing less Zords and Megazords, the one copy of Red Mystic Force Ranger (Legend Mode) (2-101) is there just in case you need than 1 or 2 points of damage to clinch the game!

That sums it up for the fixes!  Chris Goujyujin, I hope this helped!  There are plenty more decks out there that have the ability to do well, so get out there, explore, and have some fun.  Remember, if you have a deck you’d like me to doctor, send it to doa@bandai.com with the subject line: The Deck Doctor!
