Discarding cards

If a card effect says to discard a card and it doesn't specify where from, ie. in play or from hand, do you get to choose where you discard from ? For example, N-1071, says that you can discard one of your "leaf academy" ninjas. Does this mean that I can discard "leaf academy" ninjas either from my hand or from in play and even a combination of the two since it says this effect can be used as many times as you like?

If a card asks for you to discard cards but doesn't specify where those cards are coming from, it means to discard cards from your hand.

In your example, N-1071 is asking for you to discard 1 inplay "Leaf Academy" Ninja. Ninja refers to in play Ninja cards.
