Playing/Resolving Effects & Jutsus (Explained)
Playing/Resolving Effects & Jutsus (Explained)
Do the following steps in the listed order when playing an effect or Jutsu card. - Announce and reveal (if hidden) the source of the effect or the Jutsu card.
- If it's a Jutsu, declare a user that meets all the requirements.
- If it is modal (ex. "Do one of the following..."), declare the mode(s).
- If any alternative costs exist, declare if you will be using them.
- If an optional X exists in the cost that is not determined by the target, declare it now.
- Select any and all targets.
- If an X exists that is determined by the target, it is set now.
- If any distribution exists (ex. "distribute 3 coins among the targets"), declare the distribution now.
- Calculate final cost by taking into account all increases, then all decreases, finally apply any replacement costs, and the cost is now set.
- Pay the cost.
- The effect/jutsu is now on the chain.
On resolution: - Check that at least 1 legal target still exists. If the effect resolves it will only apply to the legal targets. A Legal target means that:
1) The card still meets the conditions that it can be targeted. This occurs after cost have been paid but before the resolution of the effect off the Chain (Ex: For activated effects after the cost but before the ":".)
2) The card still has any characteristics that were required by the target such as 'target: 1 "Male" Ninja'.
3) The card is still in the area that it was targeted in originally and never left that area.
- If it's a Jutsu, check that the user still meets all the requirements.
- If it's a Jutsu, check that the user is still on the battlefield.
- Check that the source/user is still in play and controlled by the same player as the effect/jutsu. (There is 1 exception to this rule for effects that remove the source from play themselves. - Ex. [Mission] Discard this Ninja: Draw 1 card. )
- If it's a Ninja effect, check that the Ninja is Healthy or if the Ninja is injured, that the effect is Valid. (There is 1 exception to this rule for effects that remove the source from play themselves. - Ex. [Mission] Discard this Ninja: Draw 1 card. )
- If all checks are passed, resolve the effect/Jutsu. Otherwise, the effect fails.
