In the anime its made clear that it was a clone, and that itachi was just toying.

Itachi can put you inside of a illusion and then stab you like 1 million times. That takes some real brain power to do.

Then again Kakashi can just put one of your limbs into another dimension. Yeah, kakashi is smarter. XD

Itachi can make you think you just won a battle. But in reality, he's just sitting there watching you fight a clone.

When they fought they were matched up before Itachi used T-Yomi.. Things would be much different if they fought again.
