"With weekly releases, save for holidays and other events, the manga currently has 309 chapters (only 96 of which have been released in North America). The anime currently has 187 aired episodes (of which 37 have been aired by Viz Media in North America). Although it debuted some time after the manga, the anime is quickly catching up since one anime episode usually covers around one and a half manga chapters. To prevent overlapping, the anime's producers tend to organize content from the manga chapters into long, uneventful sections followed by short bursts of energy-packed action, sometimes adding filler. However, save for the major fillers in the animated version, the anime generally remains true to the manga. New episodes, animated by Studio Pierrot, air weekly on TV Tokyo in Japan during the Golden Time slot (Japan's equivalent of prime time in the US) each Wednesday night at 7:27PM. The series has also spawned two movies, Naruto the Movie: Yukihime Ninpōchō and Naruto the Movie 2: Maboroshi no Chiteiiseki. An announcement for Naruto the Movie 3 was made on August 6, 2005, just after the release of the second movie. It is expected to be released during August of 2006." FUNImation/Viz's have nothing to do with the show, they are just USA Distributers of the show. The story dies when the Manga dies or if Studio Pierrot decided to kill off the Anime. But the Magna may still go on then if that happens. Other info..... "When the Sasuke Retrieval Arc ended, the anime was at a point where it was quickly gaining on the manga, its source material. So at the conclusion of this arc, the anime immediately switched to anime only filler episodes. Many fans were disappointed (some even infuriated) by this, although most fans understood that had the anime overtaken the manga, the series would have completely differed from the original source (à la what happened to the Trigun and Fullmetal Alchemist anime series) or they would have halted production of the anime series altogether, such as what happened to InuYasha, Zatch Bell!, and Fruits Basket. However, many fans are concerned that the overindulgence of filler episodes will lead to the show's eventual cancellation (therefore not airing anything from after the "Time Jump"), a fate which befell Rurouni Kenshin's anime adaptation. why end something so well done.
this isnt dbz, where they stare at eachother for 26 episodes, at lease these fillers have some character development. I want this series to continue on as long as masashi can keep his storymaking on the excellent level he does. He already knows the ending to naruto, its just everything leading up to it, and tying up all the losse storyarcs he created thats he works on with all his manga chapters

Rurouni Kenshin never reached its full potential because of filler episodes. Not making the whole Enishi story arc was a tragic loss for anime. The third season filler episodes were horrible. Kenshin would have been far better off waiting and then making the Enishi story arc. Naruto, also has really lagged the last 30-40 episodes (not sure exactly when the filler began anymore its been so long since a plot advancing story arc). They would really do better to wait and get back to making anime that follows actual storyline. I think most fans would rather wait and see the real storyline develop than see cheap, episodes designed by second hand people. I doubt many fans would simply give up watching Naruto if they simply took a little break and continued making stories consistent with manga.
