Yeah, there is a difference, but I doubt the North American masses would notice it or even care about it. Personally, I'd like "Choji" to be spelled "Chouji", but who that knows at least some Japanese would wish the converse?

It could also be awareness that, as the anime is on Cartoon Network, it may attract fans who aren't as sophisticated in the intricacies of translating Japanese as we are. Due to the rules of English, they see the word "Chouji" and many are going to mispronounce it "Chew-ji". The spelling "Choji" isn't going to confuse as many people.

If anything it would be cho Uu gee! And that is not as bad as some of the accents in the dub....

What are you talking about? For a bunch of American English-speaking voice actors that more than likely have no previous experience speaking Japanese, they are doing an excellent job!!

I personally think the voice actor for english Kakashi does an AWESOME job at the correct japanese prounciations. I recall from IMDB, that this actor has been dubbing anime for many years, so hes probably very experanced.

There are times where he even does the correct "r" sound in Sakura for example, and it catches me off guard. Naruto gets my applause for actually keeping true to its japanese counterpart (unlike One Piece).

Yes, Correctly prounouncing Chouji...the U does change the way you inflect the 'oo' sound in his name, but this is so subtle that there is really no reason to carry it over into english.

Agreed. As previously stated, romanization in the Hepburn system can be confusing to people who aren't used to it. The sound is so subtle that if the listner isn't trained to hear it, they might not notice the difference at all.
