You cant take the parts that change things away and say that a character is weaker or stronger because they had x power or because of x situation.
if you ask me, those handicaps are what define somebody as better or worse.

You are missing the point. I'm not saying itachi could not have won, I'm saying that we have no reason to believe that he would have won without it, because up to that point, their attacks didn't even phase kabuto. Therefore, the likelihood of them winning without izanami/izanagi is drastically reduced.
The point is not "who is more powerful and why?". The point is, Kabuto is by no means weak or a "failure", as the person I was speaking to suggested. That is the only reason I even brought it up. Their attitude was "Kabuto was beaten, therefore, kabuto is pathetic in the eyes of orochimaru", which doesn't make sense at all.

They handicapped themselves due to the situation and overall goal they had in mind, compared to Kabuto who had no such restraints.

irrelevant. I didn't say that kabuto was more powerful than the two of them, I said he would not be beaten by them if not for izanami. Their attacks had absolutely no effect on him up to that point. They knew his weakness and exploited it. My point is simply that that does not make Kabuto "weak" or "a failure". That simply makes him unlucky, as without that advantage, the evidence of who would win is stacked in his favor, which is an impressive feat.
