Kinda like a father and 2 sons "attention plea" dynamic. One son is praised and showered in attention, the other (despite trying 100 times harder in everything) is more or less ignored and shunned. In the end the prodigal son will shine and the forgotten one either self destructs (antagonists) or sacrifices/supports the prodigy (protagonists)

at least, thats how I seen it.

Yeah, something like that. After all, Orochimaru is their sensei, more or less, and Kabuto and Sasuke his apprentices, similarly to Naruto with Jiraiya and Sakura with Tsunade. A rather twisted sensei of course, lol.

Why would you assume pity? Kabuto handled Sage mode perfectly fine. If itachi didn't have izanami he would have been able to beat sasuke and itachi at the same time, which, even with all the power creep we've seen, is **** impressive.

For all we know, he handled sage mode flawlessly. I could understand pity for losing, but not for "I knew you couldn't handle sage mode". That wouldn't make sense.

I think the actual message in the scene is more like "you're trying to be someone you're not, Kabuto". Itachi told him that as well and it's true. Kabuto was always pretending to be someone else since his childhood events that were shown in his flashback.

Orochimaru comes off as the guy that foresaw everything. He knew Sasuke would crave the power to train with him, he knew that once he was "killed" Sasuke would hunt down Itachi, which he wanted so he could attempt to take his body again, then when Sasuke revived him from Anko's mark, he acted like he knew that all along (and admitted he was able to see everything occurring and felt like it "wasn't worth the effort" to partake)
So, to me, it appeared he pitied Kabuto. Kabuto himself was always trying to impress Orochi by being what he thought he wanted. Be it a spy, an aide, a medic, and if Orochi had wanted, a vessel (he even got that wish when he implanted part of orochimaru in him) and Kabuto knew what would impress him was power. So he went for sage mode (something that without the orochi implant he himself admitted wouldn't have been possible) and had thought himself the most powerful man in the world because of it. I'm sure even without Izanami Itachi'd have found a way to beat him, and Orochimaru knew that. He knew Kabuto was nothing but a failure just trying to impress him, and for that pitied him.

Something to consider about Kabuto is he probably wanted to revive Orochimaru and present him with Sasuke's body. That's why he wanted Sasuke from Tobi and that's why he kept Anko alive. Kabuto was the only truly loyal person Orochimaru ever had, and I guess regardless of how twisted he is, it has touched him in some way.

kimimaro would disagree. his reasons for being loyal were depressing, but he was definitely truly loyal and spent his last breath trying to do "good" for his master.

True, I forgot about Kimimaro. Kabuto seems to be more than just a follower though, he wasn't just sacrificing himself for Oro's cause, but actively giving advice and even trying to argue whenever he thought there was a better alternative. He saw himself as someone worthy to be at Oro's side, whereas Kimimaro didn't really care what would happen to himself as long as Oro's goals are achieved.

I'm curious to see what will Kabuto do once he goes out of Izanami, and also what would Anko do if she wakes up first and sees him there.
