Name a theme and give a discription

With New people joining up (myself included) it can be a little over whelming getting to know what decks do what. so i propose that we break it down and explain it for people who dont know. like what is gaara 9000 and the idea behind it. or the basis of a sage deck or earth mental , tree, weapon, yada yada yada. lets see your ideas

In a nutshell, many of the archetypical decks of antiquity were based around a single theme with meta cards thrown in. (Here "meta cards" refer to cards that almost every deck carried at the time, such as or to name a couple, in addition to cards that were silly not to run in a certain element, such as this .) Generally, when Bandai designs a set, they give support to several themes. The themes that come out the strongest are usually remembered as certain deck types. Once you see how these deck types come about from themes, you'll probably be able to extrapolate this concept to pretty much all the decks you're asking about.

I'll start with the Gaara O9k deck since that's the one you mentioned first. As you probably know, it's this that gave life to the theme. This Gaara searches out sand jutsus, so you can probably guess what else went into O9k decks: that's right, sand jutsus. If you take a look at what was available at the time, you'll probably find that , , and maybe were the most solid jutsu options at the time. Other meta cards that often filled in the deck were things like and simply because they were the best options at the time. If O9k were revived today, we'd see other meta cards like or instead. Pretty much the whole goal of the deck was to consistently get Gaara out and give him sufficient chakra to wreak havoc upon the opponent, so these were the main cards used for the broad umbrella containing "Over 9000" decks. Of course, many variants were made on this, using options like to get Gaara out earlier and as Andy recently mentioned, and to wipe the opponent's field. O9k generally also carried early game mental power support simply because it was the strongest early game wind had at the time.

You can usually look at the main card that describes a theme, such as , and find what cards are needed to support it. In this case we need and good draw power to build "RespectiveDreams.dec". It's a little bit of a stretch to say Respective Dreams is a deck type, since it was more like a really good mission for earth and wind, so maybe a better example is the Freedori deck. Here the theme is based around this , who can use Chidori for free. If we look around, this was considered the best at the time. Other cards that help this theme are obviously other ninjas that can use Chidori, such as this , who was by far the best Kakashi in the meta back then. Other cards that went in the deck were simply more support cards and meta cards from what was available at the time. If you want more detail on what went into each deck, you can look at old threads in the deck dojo using the search function. Just make sure not to necro them. Have fun looking around!

EDIT: Well, I started writing, but I got slightly off the point you brought up. In response to your topic, I think it would take a very large time commitment for a single member to compile all these deck types. In my opinion it's better for new members to search up old decks in the deck dojo. That way they can see the variants in decks of a certain theme and what cards are shared among them.

in all honesty this is what i was looking for. someone to come by and just give out random thoughts you know there is only so much you can learn from the "rulebook" about the game. and this thread was to maybe help the new people understand different things. i wouldnt expect any one person to come up with every single idea but if one person had a favorite post why you like the theme. helps generate conversation because to be honest the deck discussion thread isnt really the most poping of conversations.

So true. I really do believe the deck dojo could benefit from weekly or maybe even monthly threads/articles about deckbuilding and analysis. At this point people just post whatever deck they've thrown together and ask, "hay gaiz, wutcha thingk abowt mye dek?" If we go back to what made decks in the past successful and post deck profiles, the community could really get something going. I think one of the main reasons players don't post competitive decks is because they don't want to reveal their tech, but if we stick to older decks and basic current-meta ones it might draw some incentive to post worthwhile ideas. After all, it'll really help the competitive community grow.

That newb quote I made also makes me think about the dojo needing a "Read before you post" sticky as well. There's one in the casual discussion section, but not in any of the others. Maybe it could talk about the text format to use when posting a deck, general guidelines to follow when building a deck, and most importantly, giving a description of what the deck is designed to do and any special cards used as tech. It doesn't do much good to post a card list and expect newer players to grasp exactly what the deck is trying to do. In late April I'll have more time to possibly get this going if no one wants to take the reins right now.

This was a good idea. I personally was wondering what Over 9000 was but now I know. One of the decks I was wondering about was Ninja Dogs. I was told it could win Turn 3. As I was not around at the time could someone explain how they achieved this?

Im still very new to the game so alot of the thoughts behind decks and reason they work is beyond me. All im aware of right now is void and a fire/lighting - weapon deck i built...so this kind of deck discusion is very helpful to me and im sure alot of other new players
