The New User Starter Guide.

This information will be updated as time goes along, (EG when rotation happens or if new rule changes are implemented) Please feel free to post any useful info, or if you are new please go ahead and introduce yourself or ask some questions here which will further improve the guide.
Currently, the sets that are Block legal are: 19-28
Here is a list of all current reprints.
After Gencon 2013, sets 26-30 will be legal.

Intro - Quick Pro-Tips
  1. -When you want to link to something, use [l.ink] and [/l.ink] (minus the periods of course) if you want to link to a card, there's 2 different ways, but I prefer [C.ARD2=*number of card*]Name of card or whatever you wanna put[/CARD.2] again, minus the periods. Here is a link to my profile and (as well as my Naruto OTP)
    - Side note on linking: y0otube is censored for some reason (watch: *******) so to link to it from there, on the video you want to link to, simply click "Share" and then cut and copy the link. Paste it in the proper place using the [link] tags above. Like so, VOILA!!!
  2. -Please post any and all questions on cards or the game in the Card Q&A forum. BEFORE YOU POST THOUGH, Remember to search said forum, using the Search link at the top. Someone may have asked and answered your question already. (Pro-Pro-tip: Use the card number of the card you wanted to ask about)
  3. -As "general" as the GD forum is, please keep it Naruto related, as well as relevant for discussion. (IE don't make a thread where all you say is "Sasuke is best character!" it's spam, it's annoying, and can warrant a banning if you do it multiple times)
  4. -Keep all profanity, vulgar languages, threats, basically anything violating These forum rules off the boards. The mods, mainly Tylar, have begun getting serious about enforcing them as well
  5. -Go to "User CP" up at the top of the board and then click "Edit Options" on the side. Scroll until you see "Enable Private Messaging" and check the box. This allows you to recieve PM's, in case someone wants to contact you about whatever.

The Game
And yes, you just lost.
Block Format and you
  • Block format is the way Naruto is played at most locals and bigger events like Chunins and Shonen Jump Championships. Basically, the only cards you may use are ones from the most recent 5-7 sets.
  • This includes all lower set cards that have been reprinted in any legal sets, whether via Starter Deck, Tourney Pack, or promo wise. For a list of legal reprints, click the navy link at the top of the page.
  • Every year (sometime after Gencon) "rotation" happens. This means that a few sets are now illegal to use.
  • Those that don't play block format play what's known as "Unlimited" format. This allows use of any and all currently printed naruto CCG cards, except those on the Rogue list.
  • A new set becomes "Legal" for sanctioned play 3 weeks (21 days) after release. Say for example a set releases on June 1st. It will be legal for any and all competitions as of June 21st. This rule is enforced whether you play Block or Unlimited.
Rogue Lists and the "Rogue Ninja" list (Black List)
  • Rogue lists are basically lists of cards that you can't use 3 of in a deck, like you normally could. They can be Semi-Limited (2 of per deck) Limited (1 per deck) or Banned (0 per deck) Obviously in Block format, any card from a non-legal set that hasn't been reprinted is considered banned. You can find the Rogue lists above by moving over Organized Play, then Rouge Lists, and selecting a format.
  • Rogue lists get updated whenever a new set is released, and they take effect when that set becomes legal. Thus, try to stay up to date on whats good and what's banned. If you are ever unsure, ask a Meijin before the tournament starts.
  • The Rogue ninja list I mentioned is what I call the Black List. Basically it's a list of players that are banned from playing this game in any tourneys. Needless to say, AVOID THIS AT ALL COSTS!!!! You can see what gets you on the list here

The Community
  • We here on the Naruto forums are a diverse bunch, but generally, as long as you follow the forum rules, you should be fine. There is a lot to do here. For starters, Discussions are located all over the place. In Block discussion, we hold thread to talk about new previews, which are posted on the BandaiCG Facebook page. Feel free to add even the simplest input, the mods are usually always lurking for our thoughts.
  • Make sure you post what you want in the proper section. Keep Questions in Q&A, keep general talk here in GD, keep deck posts and questions in the proper Deck Discussion threads, etc.
  • You can edit quotes and make them shorter. Remove any and all unnecessary info, that way you won't be page stretching or spamming
  • Also, when quoting, you'll notice a button with a paper and a + sign. Click that "selects" it. If you then click on another "Quote" button you will quote them both! this is called "Multi-Quoting" and is very handy as multi-posting is spam
  • When dealing with spoilers: Not everyone can keep up at the same time on things like the anime and manga, so if you are referrencing the latest episode, the latest chapter, or generally so far ahead some may not know what you mean, you should hide those details. To do this simply go under "colors" and select "Wheat", and you'll get something like this: [C.OLOR="Wheat"] Spoilers here[/C.OLOR] and it wil blend in to the wall. It can thus only be seen by highlighting the post. Here's an example, try highlighting it yourself: [SPOILER] Bruce Willis is a ghost, Darth Vader is Luke's Father, Jesus dies, then comes back after 3 days [/SPOILER]

Terminology
There's a lot of slang you'll see here on the Bandai Forums. Here's a quick cheat sheet:
  • GG - Good Game. Used both to mean "You just won" and "That's game over"
  • Snipe - A jutsu that targets X (usually 1) ninjas, or in other words can hit a stand-by ninja, which is 90% of the time untouchable in battle. is a good snipe example.
Tutor - A card (usually a Ninja or Mission) that searches for a certain card. is a great example.
  • Curve - Your ninja lineup in terms of EC. You're deck wants to somehow drop a ninja on turn, every turn. For example playing a turn 0, 1, and then 2 on your first 3 turns is "Hitting your Curve"
  • Drop - Your drop is what you deploy that turn. Not deploying is known as "Missing your drop"
  • PiP - Short for "Put in Play" and can refer to any ninja that was put into play in any way besides deploy.
  • Splash - Throwing a card that's usually off element into a deck. Some people splash good Turn 0's like in a deck, because it's generally nice for any and all decks.
  • OV - Short for the game term "Outstanding Victory"
  • BR - Short for the game term "Battle Reward"
Swing - Another way to say "I attack with"
Top Deck - To pull something in your draw for the turn. for example "top decking your drop" means that when you drew for your turn, you pulled a ninja to deploy.
  • Broken - People throw this around a lot, but it usually refers to a card or combo that is too strong, and thus, every deck will want to/have to play it or suffer defeat. These cards end up on the banned or limited list most times.
  • OP - Stands for over powered. It's the next step under broken. Sure it's strong, but there are usually a few good answers per deck, or it's a deck specific combo, and not easily used unless you build a deck that can set it up.
  • Scrub - a General insult that basically means you're calling them a bad player. Try to avoid this, since 90% of people posting "scrub like" comments are usually trolling or generally new and don't know better.

Other Misc. info
  • In each new set, there is a card list which keeps all the previews up for easy access so you wont have to dig and dive for them.
  • Every so often in the GD there's a special thread known as "Tylars Corner" This is your chance to get a glimpse into the inner workings of this game by asking Tylar questions, keep an eye out as right now there's no set dates as to when he does them.
  • If you want to look up a place near you that hosts tourneys, check out both the OP website by rolling over Organized Play, and clicking OP Program Website. There's also the Organized Play forum.
  • and most importantly HAVE FUN! It is called a game for a reason after all.

Tournament Tips

A slightly tweaked version of the post by Shino'sDad below, here's a guide to what you'll want for your first tourney. Follow it for your first Chunin or SJC, or maybe even your local if it's prosperous enough.

Quote:
Your Deck (Which includes):

50 card main deck, which abides by the Rogue List and Format of the event.

10 card sideboard: Being your first tournament, you probably haven't put too much thought into a sideboard, and since you don't know what the Meta is like in your area, you can't really tailor it to what you know people will be playing. I suggest trying to get together at least 10 cards that seem like they might be helpful for possible matches. Stuff like Sabiru for stopping effects or Shimon Hijiri for decks that like to either Squad, Reinforce, or get extra Ninjas into play. Sideboard aren't mandatory, they're just a helpful tool.

15 Card Reinforcement Deck: Squads and Reinforcements that don't go into your Main Deck. Again, not mandatory, but if you have the Ninjas in your deck that either transform into the Reinforcements or the Ninjas that allow you to Squad, there's no reason not to include them. Also, the Reinforcement Deck does Not have to be exactly 15 cards, it just can't have more than that.

Supplies:

Dice: Dice are good for determining who goes first, and to keep track of your turn marker. Most people use D10's since they have a 0 side and scale up from there. A second dice may be needed if games go long or something.

Paper and Pen: Don't let people tell you otherwise, it is legal to write down notes during the game, whether it be keeping track of what jutsus your opponent has already used in their chakra or discard (to be able to determine the chance they still have jutsu), or if an effect allows you to look at your opponent's hand, you can write down all the cards. A pro-tip: Use short hand codes for stuff. So rather than writing out "Reverse Tetragram Sealing Jutsu" just put "Tetragram" or "Tetra" even. They can't complain if you aren't being slow.

Playmat: If you have one, bring one. They keep your card backs clean.

Snack or Drink: You're going to be playing for a few hours. Bringing a snack or something to drink is wise. Please note, it is a Bad idea to drink or eat while playing, as you risk not only a possible spill or smudge on your cards, but your opponent's cards as well.

An important rule! If you are unsure on something, Always ask the Meijin for a ruling. Seeing as this is your first event, people may try to take advantage of that and try to skirt rulings by you. This is hardly ever the case, but it's just better to be safe than sorry.

Have fun at the event, and hopefully you will have a positive experience. And if you don't win a single match, don't worry about it, it will always be a learning experience at first, and you will get better each time.

your rank increases as you continue posting. I believe it's Genin at 100, Chunin at 500, and Jonin at 1000+ (inb4 "what about custom titles?" Those were won in forum games. At the moment there is no way to get one.)
Originally, MJM did the card lists, but once during Set 20 he was banned, so Shino'sDad took over, only to be banned as well, so i stepped up. From there I kinda just took over. Mostly only cause im fast, since i'm always lurking the site somewhere.

all questions about the site, using it, Tournies, or something that sounds to "noobish" or whatever are allowed. Me and other veterans will gladly assist you. All questions on specific cards and gameplay however belong in the Q&A
Here's a quote from Shino's Dad that (after some trimming) I hope to include in the guide:

Stuff like Hina for getting rid of permanent Missions or Ino [Playful]/Shimon Hijiri for decks that like to either Squad, Reinforce, or get extra Ninjas into play. Sideboard aren't mandatory, they're just a helpful tool.

15 Card Reinforcement Deck: Squads and Reinforcements that don't go into your Main Deck. Again, not mandatory, but if you have the Ninjas in your deck that either transform into the Reinforcements (State 1 Ninjas, Naruto [Emerging Beast]), or the Ninjas that alow you to Squad, there's no reason not to include them. I remember someone once spilled a coke on my cards accidently, and had it not been for the sleeves being so tight, they would have been ruined. This was during Freedori format, and one of my Chidoris actually got a bit wet on the top edge, and caused it to bubble. Needless to say, I was really mad. So don't risk it.

And like OWA said, if you are unsure on something, Always ask the Meijin for a ruling. Seeing as this is your first event, people may try to take advantage of that and try to skirt rulings by you. This is hardly ever the case, but it's just better to be safe than sorry.

Thank you for the help. I didn't know I could write down the cards I see in my opponents hand. If I use a card effect that allows that.

Again thank you so much for the help.

I'm not sure if this should be posted in Q&A, but I'll try it here. What channels are useful to learn the meta and tournament reviews and such. I have tried numerous sites ,but nothing that makes a lot of sense.

Thank you.

thats allowed here. Long as it's not about A - a specific card B - a specific combo or C - how gameplay works, it's cool to ask here
I subscribe to "2ezForums" on Y0utube. They post deck reviews, reviews on cards and previews, and the meta in general. Here's the most recent video, so you can subscribe
Also, the notes thing, you can write stuff down, but make sure to shorten it. For example write "Pump" instead of "Hydro Pump" or "4th" rather then "The 4th Hokage" Whatever nicknames you want, but dont write out entire card names.

yo, twinheart dude, you sound like me. I recently joined my first chunin, and I was stressed like heck! anyway, i made sure my deck was great, and i went with the people who taught me naruto and my brother. I was pretty much with friends.

if you dont freak out, you will end up doing really well, like me, who got 5th and was able to play agianst Kevin. So just calm down, make sure you practice, and keep your cool. If youre going to the chunin cuz you know youre good, you will do good. Good luck!!
