I hate getting into these speculative A vs. B topics, but I'd like to point out that Neji doesn't necessarily lack experience. The show just doesn't focus on him. He's a Jonin for a reason. He's likely faced his share of foes with varying abilities and strengths. And although Asuma may have more experience as a factor, he also has age against him.
Also, the use of weapons, especially in Naruto world, means little when a lot of ninja's bodies and techniques are weapons in themselves. Heck, Neji trained against TenTen to develop his perfect defense and all she has going for is her use of weapons. |

1. a person who engages in an activity for pleasure rather than professional reasons well neji gets paid for being a ninja, so he's an automatic professional in that sense 2. an athlete who has enver competed for monetary gain again, he's paid. ruled out 3. a person inexperienced or unskilled in a particular activity neji has several years of experience and is considered an elite ninja and a genius, so he's not inexperienced or unskilled so yeah. amateur isn't the word for neji. like it was said, asuma definitely ha smore experience, but that doesnt mean neji has none or that he's an amateur. its a pro vs an older pro. just because you disagree with that doesnt mean the ones you disagree with are being illogical fanboys. heck i think asuma would win. that doesn't mean I'm going to pretend neji is something he's not. |

i hear ninjas get paid for doing missions

2) he's a jonin. jonin are elite ninjas. saying neji isnt an elite ninja is like saying tsunade is flat chested 3) 12>13, thats 1, 13>14, thats 2, 14>15, thats 3, 15>16, and 16>17 makes 4 so neji has the 4 "required" years to be an elite ninja Quote:
that may be how you do it, but that isn't how i do it. all im trying to get across is that your selling neji short and talking about him like some rookie. |

Neji was the advantage here, but you can't count Asuma out on this. Asuma;s 1000 Arm Embrace is a strong technique, and Burning Ash is VERY powerful and would be dangerous to be inside even with rotation. That being said, I think Neji would win, but it would be close.

I'm a Neji fan, but I think this may be more even then people would initially think. Lets first look at their stats based on the data book.
Asuma's stats: http://img545.imageshack.us/img545/3203/asumastats.jpg Neji's stats: http://img689.imageshack.us/img689/205/nejistats.jpg Neji only excels at taijutsu and so does Asuma, but he's also more well rounded, because he's simply had more time to learn and grow. Based on stats alone Asuma wins, but we know realistically that Neji doesn't need many of those other stats because he uses only taijutsu and for multiple purposes. Still one might argue that Asuma's 4.5 cancels out Neji's 4.5, but we also know that Neji's type of taijutsu more or less hard counters any other kind of taijutsu imaginable so it won't be so simple to evaluate. Now looking at Asuma's abilities we can sum it up as wind blades and versatility (since he's a leaf jonin). Lets not underestimate Asuma's wind blades. Neji's perfect defense would likely be cut through by wind natured chakra. If Neji doesn't realize this, that could be lethal for him, but his byakugan will likely give him that insight. Up close Neji will probably take the upper hand, because that simply where he's most dangerous. One hit from neji can stop someone dead in their tracks and he probably strikes faster. Also he won't be surprised by anything as he can see the chakra on Asuma's blades. Asuma will likely try to threaten Neji from a far as that would be safest, but Neji isn't completely useless from this distance. He can use his air palm although any fire or wind style jutsu Asuma has, will probably be better. And Neji may end up losing more chakra then Asuma as long as they remain at a distance. The real x factor here is that Neji is a genius of technique, but not an actual genius while Asuma actually is smart. His fighting style is linear and easily read; it relies on Neji just being flat out stronger than his opponent leaving him no options to retaliate (and this probably works for Neji 90 percent of the time). Asuma is going to be more clever than Neji would like, but the question is does he have the proper tools to effectively out smart Neji? He can cut through Neji's defense even if he would lose in an all out taijutsu fight. Also he has versatility on his side. I'm also willing to be he's got more stamina (actually the databook says Neji's stamina went way up, now matching Asuma's) and if not Neji will probably waste more chakra if Asuma can keep a distance. Overall, I think it would be close and I would love for Neji to win, but I think its more likely going to be Asuma. I could be wrong since I haven't seen a lot of the shippuden fights. Tell me if I'm missing something. |
